Why Pakistan Supports Terrorism.

Pakistan has announced a crackdown against Lakshar-e-Taiba, lead by Hafiz Saeed. LeT, was blamed for the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, which targeted the iconic Taj Hotel. Pakistan has decided to freeze all assets of the organization and the individuals and take them over.

This is due to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) placed Pakistan on its grey list for excessive money laundering ( show money that you have not paid tax on as legitimate money) and funding terrorism. The UN has also declared Hafiz Saeed, the leader of LeT, as global terrorist.

However, Pakistan has been pressured for many years to shut off financing to terrorist groups, and has promised a great deal, but so far it has not implemented any of it, which leads us to wonder why Pakistan is really funding these groups?

Pakistan’s greatest enemy has always been India. During the Bangladesh separation, they realised that they can never win a conventional war, but can deal a thousand blows to India and weaken them. By supporting militant groups such as JeM and LeT, they provide funding to weaken their enemy. Their second biggest fear is that Afghanistan allies with India and USA against them in war, so they fund Afghan based organizations like Taliban and Hafeeq network, to keep Afghan so weak that they cannot be useful allies for India. This is an extremely complex piece, embedded in decades of rivalry.

Will there ever be peace between India and Pakistan? Will Pakistan finally stick to their word? We can only wait to find out…
